Traveling Dragon Thirteen-Technique Spear

This is a merciful response to a downward chop from a Big Knife

How would you respond to the downward chop of a Big Knife? Blocking it, like what is shown in some kungfu movies, is an inferior response. It may result in the spear being chopped into two.

Two superior responses are demonstrated in this video series. The first one is merciful, merely slicing the attacker's hand. The second is deadly, resulting in serious or fatal injury to the opponent.

“Traveling Wrong Response to Downward Chop

This is a wrong way to respond to a downward chop from a Big Knife. But many people would respond in this way. This wrong response is also often shown in kungfu movies. Why is this response wrong?


“Traveling Deflecting a Downward Chop with a Slanting Block

Blocking a downward chop from a Big Knife slantingly is better as it deflects the Big Knife away, but it is not a preferred response. It places the exponent in a disadvantageous position allowing the opponent many possible follow-ups. An effective counter is to flick the opponent's wrist as he chops down his weapon.


“Traveling Flicking a Downward Chop

This is an effective response to a downward chop of a Big Knife or any bladed weapon, using the pattern “Lohan Flicks Oranges”. This is a merciful counter, merely slicing the opponent's hand. It is also a safe response. Even if you miss flicking the opponent's hand, his weapon would be unable to reach you.


“Traveling Golden Beam Supports Sea

A deadly response is “Golden Beam Supports Sea”, where you cut or pierce into the opponent's heart or other internal organs. The blunt end of the spear is used for this demonstration. It may look risky with the opponent's weapon above your head, but actually it is very safe as his weapon could not reach you even if you were slow.
