SUBSTITUTING A PLANNED ATTACK AND COUNTERING A WHIRLWIND KICK

Shaolin Four Gates

The Whirlwind Kick

If an opponent moves too fast in anticipation of your next move, you can replace that move with another one appropriate for the situation. An impromptu example is shown in Combat Sequence 1 when an opponent moves back before an exponent executes an expected Tiger-Tail Kick. The exponent skips the Tiger-Tail Kick, though it is in the routine, and steps forward with an Organ Kick.

At the beginning of Combat Sequence 2, “Bar the Big Boss” is used against an opponent 's Whirlwind Kick. Please note that it is not a block, which may result in the defender's arm being broken, but an interception technique. A well-place elbow strike on a vital point at the inside of the attacker's knee, may numb his leg.
