STANCE TRAINING FOR WUZUQUAN

Stance training, or Zhan Zhuang in Chinese, is very important in any kungfu. It develops internal force and mental clarity, not just for combat but for daily life. Both these factors will enable you to have better results no matter what you do.

To have these benefits, you must be relaxed. It may not be easy for most people, as many people are tensed, often without their conscious knowing. But to be relaxed is natural. You just don't tense your muscles and don't think of anything.

The stances in Wuzuquan are quite different from those in Northern Shaolin, Southern Shaolin and Taijiquan. The Wuzuquan Horse-Riding Stance is higher and narrower, quite like that in Wing Choon Kungfu and Xingyiquan. The Bow-Arrow Stance is shorter, and the feet are slightly apart, but not as wide as the Triangle Stance, often called the Four-Six Stance. Frequently in Wuzuquan, the body is leaned back to form the Triangle Stance

In the video below, the stances are taken from the fundamental Wuzuuan set, San Zhan. At the beginning of the video, the Horse-Riding Stance is taken from a Xingyiquan course as both the Wuzuquan Horse-Riding Stance and the Xingyiquan Horse-Riding Stance are similar.
