Tactics of Pushing Hands at Intensive Taijiquan Course in Sabah 2016 from Wong Kiew Kit on Vimeo.

For convenience, we may classified the tactics of Pushing Hands into two cateogries:

  1. Proactive tactics
  2. Reactive tactics
In proactive tactics, we initiate the tactics. In reactive tactics, we let an opponent attacks first, then we react to the attack using our tactics.

Proactive tactics may be divided into two types:

  1. Continuous attack
  2. Confusing attack
Reactive tactics may also be divided into two types:
  1. Instant counter
  2. Interception
Grandmaster Wong explained that some Taijiquan practitioners had the mistaken conception that if one was good at Pushing Hands, he would be effective in combat. This is not so. a Taijiquan practitioner who is good at Pushing Hands may not be good at combat.

Stationary Pushing Hands develops combat skills, mobile Pushing Hands develops excellent footwork, but Taijiquan practitioners must practice Striking Hands to learn various Taijiquan combat techniques.
