STANCES AND FOOTWORK

Stances and footwork, known as "ma-bu" in Chinese, are very important in any style in kungfu. It is particularly important in leg techniques.

"Ma-bu" is often thought of as only stance training, which is "zhan zhuang" in Mandarin, or "chiet ma" in Cantonese. But in our school the concept includes footwork, which is "bu fa" or "pou fatt".

In most other schools, when practitioners practice stance training, they become stable, which may affect their agility, but in our school stance training makes us both stable and agile. This is because in our stance training we develop energy control. When we desire stability, we focus our energy at our dan tian; when we desire agility we let our energy flow.
