HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF
LOHAN TAMES TIGER
Lohan Takes Tiger
The 16 Basic Shaolin Combat Sequences were first condensed into 8 Distilled Shaolin Combat Sequences, and further condensed into 4 Abridged Shaolin Combat Sequences. It should be noted that the shorter versions are condensation of the longer versions, and not a reduction of material.
In other words, although the 4 Abridged Shaolin Combat Sequences are only a quarter of the 16 Basic Shaolin Combat Sequences, they are not lesser in material. The material in the 16 sequences were condensed, not reduced, into the 4 sequences.
For example, the first 4 sequences in the 16 Basic Shaolin Combat Sequences that deal with the four directions of striking, namely top, middle, bottom and sides, were condensed into just the first sequence in the 4 Abridges Shaolin Combat Sequences. In the 16 Basic Shaolin Combat Sequences, the four categories of attack are found in 16 sequences. In the 4 Abridged Shaolin Combat Sequences, the four categories of attack are all condensed into just 4 sequences.
The four sequences are as follows:
- Sequence 1 -- Striking
- Sequence 2 -- Kicking
- Sequence 3 -- Felling
- Sequence 4 -- Chin-Na
This four sequences were linked into a set, initially called "Shaolin Four-Sequence Four-Attack Set", or "Siu Lam Sei Lou Sei Kheik Khuen" in Chinese (Cantonese). Later it was renamed "Lohan Tames Tiger", which, like most other sets, is poetic rather than technical.
